Binu's Story

Child smiling

Binu comes from a remote mountainous region of western Nepal, where access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities can be extremely limited. Her family’s difficulties were compounded by the impact of Nepal’s Maoist insurgency (1996–2006), a period of conflict that displaced many rural families and caused hardship across the country.

During this conflict, Binu’s grandparents tragically lost their lives in an explosion, leaving a lasting impact on the family. In the years that followed, her parents struggled to rebuild their lives. Working as daily wage labourers and living as squatters, they faced significant challenges in providing security and educational opportunities for their children.

Shikhar Hostel is in Dhangadhi, in Nepal’s Far West, a region where poverty remains widespread and many vulnerable children face challenges including food insecurity, limited educational opportunities, and where many families depend on casual labour work, making them particularly vulnerable to poverty and hardship.

Shikhar hostel has given Binu a chance to break this cycle of hardship. Here she receives care, stability, schooling and the support needed to grow, learn and thrive in an environment that offers hope and possibility for the years ahead.
